Shiban is the Yemen project co-ordinator for the human rights organisation Reprieve. A prominent investigator of the United States drones attacks in Yemen, he has testified to a United States congressional hearing on the effects of drones on Yemen.〔 Baraa studied business administration, and was involved with several civil society organizations in Yemen from 2006 to 2011. Shiban participated in the Yemeni revolution, helping run a media centre in Sana'a's Change Square. In September 2013 Shiban was detained at Gatwick Airport under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, after his arrival in the United Kingdom to speak at an event at Chatham House.
